Asya Voloshina’s play on the diary, with fragments of other testimony woven in. Matveeva made the Franks’ hiding place almost indistinguishable from any Soviet communal flat — except for the floor, which is paved with old shoes, dozens of pairs left without their owners.

The only thing that tells the Franks’ hiding place apart from the communal flat familiar to every Soviet person is the floor. It is uncomfortable to walk on. It is «paved» with old shoes.
